Dan Muller, Founder and CEO of Aeropay

Dan Muller, founder and CEO of Aeropay, is this week’s special guest on The Green Rush. Launched in 2017, AeroPay is a financial technology company founded whose alternative payments platform gives cannabis businesses the ability to accept digital payments both in-person and online. The AeroPay platform works by enabling bank-to-bank payments – through what the company calls ‘smart bank transfers’ – between cannabis businesses and their customers or other businesses.

Today, most cannabis businesses still rely on cash because they are considered a high-risk payments category in the U.S. due to the illegal status of marijuana at the federal level. Most mainstream banks and payment networks don’t want to participate, but there are many companies like AeroPay that are willing to take the chance to support payments in this industry.

Our hosts Anne and Nick chat with Dan about the issues and challenges cannabis businesses face when dealing in cash, AeroPay’s most recent funding round, how decriminalization under a potential Biden administration could impact the payments sector and Dan’s outlook for the future of banking and payments in the space. With 11 adult-use states currently and four more voting on this issue in the upcoming election, the financial side of this industry is a fast-moving target. So we’re glad to have Dan on the show today to talk about this timely topic and how he’s planning to get ahead of some of these big anticipated changes.

So don’t sit back, lean forward!

Daniel Muller, CEO and Founder of AeroPay

Prior to starting AeroPay, Daniel spent 10+ years in digital product innovation most recently at GPShopper (acquired by Synchrony Financial), where he oversaw the design and development of over 300 web and mobile applications for large scale Fortune 500 companies. Dan founded AeroPay in 2017 with the goal of simplifying payments for owners and operators in all industries and verticals. He is passionate about helping under-served businesses and markets through financial technology and innovation.

The Green Rush’s 150th Hostful Episode

A message from Green Rush host Anne Donohoe:

Dear Green Rush friends – Happy 150th episode day!

The Green Rush podcast started as an experiment three years ago (!) and now, 150 episodes later, we have become one of the “go to” podcasts in the industry! We now get pitched (every day!) by other PR pros wanting their execs to come on. It’s been a wild ride! When we started this, I thought we’d maybe do 10 episodes and call it a day. I mean who else would be willing to talk to us?!

Turns out – a lot of people! From “big names” like Jim Belushi, Ziggy Marley, Kevin Smith, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (twice!), Mike Tyson and Senator Tom Daschle, to leaders in the industry like Kevin Murphy, Tahira Rehmatullah, Joe Lusardi, Kris Krane, Chanda Macias, Jeanne Sullivan, Irwin Simon – and the list goes on. We wanted to create a platform where people can come on and have the runway to tell their stories in their own words. We wanted to hear about their personal journeys with cannabis, as well as their entrepreneurial aspirations in this crazy industry. It was created as a space for honest discussion and discourse – with a goal of having our listeners learn something along the way. We hope we have accomplished that goal.

Big HUGE thanks to the KCSA partners, Lewis (Lewis and then Lewis again), Todd & Jeffrey for taking a chance with us. When Lewis and I came to you with this crazy idea – you said run with it. Nick Opich – you are vital! You keep the trains running on the tracks and you’ve stepped into the co-hosting gig with grace, excitement and confidence! Phil Carlson – ditto! Thanks for your counsel, humor and for jumping in when we need you to (Go Bills!). Shea Gunther – we are nowhere without you. Your passion for the industry combined with your podcasting superpowers are amazing! You are constantly saving our butts! Tiffany Rutowski, Cassidy Colarik & the social media team – thank you for all you do to promote the podcast (and dealing with last minute…. well… everything!). Thanks to Derek Friday who is helping us with the relaunch of our newsletter. And all of our guests who have spent time with us…thank you for sharing your stories with our listeners. And to you guys – our friends and colleagues who have listened, provided feedback and supported us every step of the way – we appreciate you ALL!

Lastly – our listeners! You are everything! We love every tweet, every email (even the mean ones) and every “like” on our Instagram. Thank you for coming on this crazy ride with us.

While we’re at it, we wanted to share some cool new stuff! Like we alluded to, we’re starting up the newsletter again! So if you want to subscribe – go to our website to sign up or email us at greenrush@kcsa.com and we’ll add you to the list. We also have a YOUTUBE CHANNEL! We won’t record all of the episodes (you don’t want to see that much of us….trust me) but from time to time we’ll record the video and stick it up on the channel. Right now, we have some great initial content up there from interviews with Jim Belushi, Earl Blumenauer, Kevin Smith, etc.

Lastly, we are exploring MERCH! So if you’re interested in a T-shirt, hat, sticker – whatever – drop us a note and tell us what you’d like to see.

Ok really lastly –  social media channels! Follow us, like us, interact with us! We want to give you content that you LIKE and part of that is…. Actually KNOWING what you like. So – don’t be shy – tell us!

And as always, don’t sit back, lean forward and enjoy!

Sam Chapman, Campaign Manager for the Yes On Measure 109

Sam Chapman, Campaign Manager Yes On Measure 109 (Psilocybin Therapy) is this week’s guest on the Green Rush. Measure 109 is a carefully crafted ballot initiative supported by medical experts, veterans, and people from over 300 Oregon cities to bring psilocybin therapy to Oregon.

Much like how Oregon led the U.S. on cannabis legalization, this year, on the ballot in Oregon, voters will be able to decide whether to approve the U.S.’s first medical psilocybin program. As the Campaign Manager for this initiative Sam has been instrumental in gaining support for this measure having helped gather over 164,000 signatures supporting the proposed legislation. Against all odds, including COVID-19 we may see the very first legal psychedelics market in the US.

Our host Anne Donohoe sat down with Sam to get a full update on the campaign and talk through some of the critical components of this initiative including why was Oregon chosen to lead the psychedelics movement, how the campaign has been funded, what the program will look like if voters approve of the measure and how long it will take to ramp up the market. Sam also provides more information on his background and how our listeners can get involved to help push this campaign across the finish line.

So don’t sit back, lean forward and enjoy!

Sam has over a decade of experience in advocating for progressive drug policy reforms at the local, state, and national level. His previous experience includes consulting for statewide political campaigns, assisting local governments in writing rules and regulations, and identifying new opportunities within emerging industries. In 2013 Sam co-authored House Bill 3460, the Oregon law that legalized medical marijuana dispensaries. Sam has been a resident of Oregon for 20 years. He holds a baccalaureate degree from the University of Oregon in Philosophy and Political Science.

Psychedelic Science Funders Collaborative Capstone Campaign Virtual Press Conference

This week on The Green Rush we’re publishing the virtual press conference announcing the completion of the Capstone Campaign, a $30 million fundraising effort headlined by the Psychedelic Science Funders Collaborative and MAPS, to support the final stretch of Phase 3 trials required to seek FDA approval of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD.

Featuring Joe Green, Co-Founder of PSFC; Rick Doblin, Founder and Executive Director of MAPS; Amy Emerson, CEO of MAPS Public Benefit Corps as well as major donors Tim Ferriss, Author and Entrepreneur and Alan Fournier, Founder of Pennant Capital, the press conference highlights the excitement around the potential of psychedelics, the wholesale reassessment of drugs like MDMA and psilocybin and their potential to help address some of the defining mental health crises of our time.

With an interim analysis of the first Phase 3 trial showing greater than 90% probability to significantly effect treating PTSD, this final funding round could help put MAPS’ clinical trial on track to submit to the FDA for approval as soon as 2022. For those following the path to FDA approval for psychedelics, this episode is a must listen to.

So don’t sit back, lean forward and enjoy!

Joe Green, Co-Founder and President of PSFC

Joe Green is the co-founder and President of PSFC. Joe supports causes that have a high potential for systemic impact, yet limited resources to achieve their full potential. PSFC was created because medical trials of MDMA and psilocybin have shown compelling evidence to treat millions of people who suffer from mental health issues, but there was insufficient funding to complete the next phase of trials. Joe is a social entrepreneur who has spent his career addressing significant challenges by marrying technology with community organizing. Joe co-founded Causes, which empowered more than 100 million people to make an impact; NationBuilder, a leading software provider for organizers; and FWD.us, which has mobilized the tech community around immigration and criminal justice reform. He is currently the chairman and co-founder of Treehouse, an organization that builds communal housing apartment buildings in Los Angeles, and chairman of Or Halev, a center for Jewish meditation.
