Netflix’s ‘Have a Good Trip’ Director Donick Cary

Emmy-winning Writer, Producer, and Director Donick Cary is this week’s special guest on The Green Rush! Well know around the television and film industry for having written for TV staples like The David Letterman Show, The Simpsons, Silicon Valley and Parks and Recreation, Donick is also the writer and director for the Netflix hit, ‘Have a Good Trip’. Mixing comedy with a thorough investigation of psychedelics, ‘Have a Good Trip’ explores the pros, cons, science, history, future, pop cultural impact, and cosmic possibilities of hallucinogens. The documentary also includes some of the best psychedelic trip stories from celebrities like Sting, Sarah Silverman, Ben Stiller, A$AP Rocky and late greats Carrie Fisher and Anthony Bourdain.

Our host Lewis sat down the Donick to discuss his film in greater depth including what drew his attention to psychedelics, his inspiration for developing a documentary around stories of psychedelic trips (and how he sold that idea to Netflix), his own introduction to psychedelics and whether or not he’s turning to psychedelics to help him deal with the anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Donick is one of the most talented writers in Hollywood and it was a real treat to have him join us to discuss his journey.

Filmaker and Writer Donick Cary

Emmy-winning Writer, Producer, and Director Donick Cary got his start writing for Late Night with David Letterman. He continued writing for Dave at The Academy Awards (but not the Oprah-Uma joke) and served as both Head Writer and “The Guy in the Bear Suit” on Late Show with David Letterman. After five years in late night, Cary moved to The Simpsons, where he served as a Co-Executive Producer for seasons seven through eleven, winning an Emmy and penning many memorable episodes including “D’oh-in in The Wind,” “In Marge We Trust,” (Mr. Sparkle) and “Hell Toupee”  (Homer gets the hair transplants of a killer).

Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-3)

Earl Blumenauer, a House Democrat from Oregon and one of the preeminent voices in the cannabis legalization movement returns for another episode of The Green Rush! Congressman Blumenauer has represented Oregon as a congressman for over 20 years, a state where voters first legalized medical marijuana back in 1998, becoming one of the very first states to do so. Oregon made history again in 2012 when its voters legalized adult use cannabis. 

Our hosts Anne and Lewis to talk about the COVID-19 pandemic and the legislation he’s introduced in the House to make cannabis businesses eligible for the next round of the SBA PPP loans. The Congressman also provides an update on the latest movement of the SAFE Banking Act and how its being held up by ‘Moscow Mitch’ in the Senate, provides an in-depth analogy of how current cannabis prohibition mirrors alcohol prohibition in the 1930s and what his conversations with presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden have been like and how accommodating to advancing the industry forward he may be.

Congressman Blumenauer has been on the front lines of fighting for cannabis rights for over two decades so anyone interested in the future of cannabis legislation, this episode is one you will not want to miss.

Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-3) 

A lifelong resident of Portland, Oregon, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-3) has devoted his entire career to public service. While still a student at Lewis and Clark College, he spearheaded the effort to lower the voting age both in Oregon and at the national level. He was elected to the Oregon Legislature in 1972, where he served three terms and Chaired the House Education and Revenue Committee in 1977-78. In 1978, he was elected to the Multnomah County Commission, where he served for eight years before being elected to the Portland City Council in 1986. There, his 10-year tenure as the Commissioner of Public Works demonstrated his leadership on the innovative accomplishments in transportation, planning, environmental programs and public participation that have helped Portland earn an international reputation as one of America’s most livable cities.

Elected to the US House of Representatives in 1996, Mr. Blumenauer has created a unique role as Congress’ chief spokesperson for Livable Communities: places where people are safe, healthy and economically secure.  From 1996 to 2007, he served on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he was a strong advocate for federal policies that address transportation alternatives, provide housing choices, support sustainable economies and improve the environment. He was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee from 2001 to 2007, and vice-chair of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming from 2007 to 2010.  He is currently a member of the Ways and Means Committee and the subcommittees on Health, Oversight, and Tax Policy. Congressman Blumenauer’s academic training includes undergraduate and law degrees from Lewis and Clark College in Portland.

Kevin Smith, Filmaker and Cultural Icon

Kevin Smith, world-renowned filmmaker and cultural icon is today’s special guest on The Green Rush! Most well-known for his rise to prominence as the character Silent Bob in his classic film “Clerks” in 1994 (which he also wrote, directed and co-produced) Kevin Smith has since become a household name as an actor, writer, director, comedien, public speaker, comic book writer, author and podcaster. 

Longtime listeners to the show should remember our interview with Kevin’s hetero life mate, Jason Mewes, AKA Jay of the comedic duo Jay and Silent Bob, back in December of 2018. Together they have appeared in Smith’s collection of films including Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II and Silent Bob Reboot. 

A native New Jerseyan, Lewis and Anne sat down with Kevin for a lengthy discussion to chat about their shared New Jersey roots as well as all things cannabis and podcasting. Within the conversation, our hosts explored with Kevin his love of podcasting, his films, his supernatural ability to smoke cannabis all day, everyday and remain highly productive, the development of his own strains of weed (and where to find them!), his upcoming projects and much, much more. 

In addition to being a cannabis icon, Kevin is an incredibly generous person and all of us at The Green Rush are grateful that he joined us to geek out about movies and cannabis.

Adam Orens and Sal Barnes from MPG Consulting (formerly the Marijuana Policy Group), are this week’s guests on The Green Rush! Adam Orens is the founder of MPG. Adam has 13 years of experience in economic and public policy consulting, including market analysis, public finance, and regional economic analysis. Adam has completed numerous studies that analyze the relationships between markets, demographics, and government policy. Adam has advised numerous early-stage cannabis businesses in their formation, and strategic and business planning. Adam has also helped governments implement successful cannabis regulatory systems in Colorado, Canada, Florida, and California. In addition to Adam’s regulated cannabis qualifications, he and MPG  have completed complex consulting engagements for businesses and governments in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas.

Salmeron Barnes – Managing Director

Sal is a Managing Director at the MPG Consulting responsible for the growth and strategy of the firm. In this role, he has helped numerous early-stage companies, established enterprises, institutional capital firms, and Native American Tribes create and execute effective cannabis and hemp strategies ranging from business planning to operational execution. While at MPG, Sal has also delivered economic and public policy consulting projects, including market analysis, public finance, and regional economic analysis across North America, Latin America, and Europe. Anthony Coniglio, CEO of New Lake Capital Partners, an independent investment vehicle focused on acquiring a diversified real estate portfolio of industrial and retail properties in the cannabis industry, is this week’s guest on The Green Rush! To date, NewLake has acquired a real estate portfolio from coast-to-coast with tenants across the supply chain including cultivation, manufacturing and retail, providing these companies with much needed liquidity.

Lewis Koski, Chief Operating Officer of Metrc

Lewis Koski is the Chief Operating Officer of Metrc – the nation’s leading solution for cannabis and hemp governance. Koski was director of the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division, where he helped build the first state agency to develop and implement medical and adult-use cannabis policy. He most recently co-founded Freedman & Koski, where he partnered with government agencies to build cannabis policies. Koski is recognized internationally as an expert in formative cannabis policy, as he helped to develop regulations that balance cannabis industry growth and public safety. Rick Doblin, Founder and Executive Director of MAPS, the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies

Rick Doblin, Founder and Executive Director of MAPS, the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies is this week’s guest on The Green Rush. Founded by Rick in 1986, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit research and educational organization that develops medical, legal, and cultural contexts for people to benefit from the careful uses of psychedelics and marijuana. MAPS envisions a world where psychedelics and marijuana are safely and legally available for beneficial uses, and where research is governed by rigorous scientific evaluation of their risks and benefits.

Rick is a major advocate of the therapeutic benefits of psychedelic molecules like MDMA and psilocybin to treat mental health challenges so Lewis and Anne invited him on to discuss how psychedelics may benefit those that are suffering from stress and other psychological problems caused by the COVID pandemic. In addition, our hosts chat with Rick about the organizations MDMA trials and the recent ‘breakthrough status’ it has received from the FDA; offers guidance to those contemplating using psychedelics as part of their self-care routines while dealing with social distancing and the overall growth of both the for-profit and non-profit sectors of the psychedelic space.

Rick Doblin, Founder and Executive Director of MAPS

Rick Doblin, Ph.D., is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his Master’s thesis on a survey of oncologists about smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. His undergraduate thesis at New College of Florida was a 25-year follow-up to the classic Good Friday Experiment, which evaluated the potential of psychedelic drugs to catalyze religious experiences. He also conducted a thirty-four year follow-up study to Timothy Leary’s Concord Prison Experiment. Rick studied with Dr. Stanislav Grof and was among the first to be certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner. His professional goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. He founded MAPS in 1986, and currently resides in Boston with his wife, dog, and empty rooms from three children, one of whom is in college and two have graduated.

Punit Seth, CEO, Director and Co-Founder of Toast

Punit Seth, CEO, Director and Co-Founder of Toast, a forward thinking cannabis brand delivering full-spectrum CBD and some low-dose THC products, is this week’s guest on The Green Rush! Kris has dedicated his career to reforming the nation’s misguided drug policies, having served as associate director of NORML from 2000 to 2005 and executive director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy from 2006 to 2009.
