New York State Senator Liz Krueger

New York State Senator Liz Krueger, an outspoken advocate for cannabis and the lead sponsor of the “Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act” is returns to The Green Rush this week!

After it looked like 2019 would finally be the year that New York would legalize adult use cannabis, the state legislature was unable to find common ground on a number of issues and failed to pass a bill that would satisfy the Democratic majority. Senator Krueger, who previously appeared on The Green Rush back in 2018, joins Lewis and guest host, Gretchen Gailey, to discuss what went wrong and what needs to happen in 2020 to get full legalization passed in the state.

In our conversation, our hosts explore the debates that took place around the Senator’s cannabis bill, what New York is learning from other states that have passed legalization, the race to legalization between New York and New Jersey and what the outlook looks like for cannabis legalization in 2020.

So don’t sit back, lean forward and enjoy!

About New York State Senator Liz Krueger

First elected to the New York State Senate in a Special Election in February 2002, Liz Krueger is currently the Ranking Member of Senate Finance Committee. She is also a member of five other committees: Elections; Higher Education; Housing, Construction and Community Development; Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities; and Rules. For the past several years, Manhattan state senator Liz Krueger has proposed a marijuana tax and regulation bill modeled on the state liquor law that treats marijuana companies like beverage distributors. Senator Krueger’s conservative estimate is that legalization of cannabis could produce $500 million in new revenue for the state government, $2 billion in new economic activity, and $300 million in savings for the state’s criminal justice system.

Congressional Cannabis Day Part 4 – Veterans Panel

We’ve now hit the final rendition of our special series highlighting the panels of the inaugural “KCSA Congressional Cannabis Day Forum” at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. As part of the event, KCSA gathered a host of some of the brightest minds in the industry for a series of panel discussions aimed at addressing critical issues relevant to the sector, including capital markets and banking, CBD/hemp, opioids, veterans’ issues and social justice.

In the fourth and final installment of this series, we hear from our Veterans Panel which shined a brighter light on how veterans have been able to use cannabis to treat a variety of post-combat issues like PTSD and chronic pain. We were privileged to have with us, Melissa Bryant, Chief Policy Officer for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Joe Penzler, Director of Communications for the Wounded Warrior Project’s Government and Community Relations, Nick Etten, Vice President of Government Affairs at Acreage Holdings, Bill Ferguson, Co-Founder of the Veterans Cannabis Coalition and Moderator Michael Correia, Director of Government Relations for NCIA.

Many in the veteran community struggle under unique health burdens stemming from their service, and have experienced little success in managing their conditions with available pharmaceuticals. Through cannabis, veterans of all generations and states of health have experienced improvements in their quality of life–whether it is as a supplemental treatment for cancer or a traumatic brain injury. Our panel’s discussion focused on the legal, moral, and ethical of making cannabis available to veterans and how the plant can be used as an alternative to opioids.

So don’t sit back, lean forward and enjoy!

Delving Deep Into Pot Policy

Welcome to another episode of the Green Rush! Anne is back in town and joining Lewis to chat with Adam Orens, the Founding Partner of the Marijuana Policy Group, one of the most respected economic and policy consulting firms, nationally recognized for its role in shaping regulated medical and recreational cannabis markets. Adam and our hosts have a fascinating discussion around some of the recent research coming out of the MPG, including a study on the size of the Canadian market, sponsored by Health Canada (hint: it’s big), and how Colorado is essentially erasing the black market (and what other states can do to take note). Adam also let’s us in on some clients that have surprised him and why.

Adam Orens is a founding partner of the Marijuana Policy Group His areas of expertise include market analysis, public finance, and regional economic analysis. He also has experience in statistical analysis and consumer market research. Adam has completed numerous studies that analyze the relationships between markets, demographics and government policy. Adam received his undergraduate degree in economics from Rutgers University and has a master’s degree in agricultural and resource economics from Colorado State University.

Adam’s demographic and economic research related to the emerging cannabis market has been cited by the New York Times, 60 Minutes, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and the Huffington Post. His recent studies in Colorado, Alaska, Illinois, Maryland, and Vermont have examined many facets of medical and recreational cannabis markets, including providing estimates of cannabis market size; annual cannabis consumption by residents, tourists and patients; cannabis tax revenue projections; and market supply channels. Adam was a lead author of the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division 2014 Market Size and Demand report and continues to provide consulting services to the MED and private interests nationwide.
